The Year of the Horse

Gung hay fat choi! 2014 is the year of the Horse.
Welcome to my first entry of my fine art blog.
Horses were a common subject when I was young, always sketching and doodling images of them. Although I never owned a horse myself, I grew up in the San Fernando Valley in the 60's, while it was still somewhat rural with orange groves and horse ranches. I had plenty of opportunity to ride rental horses around the scenic Chatsworth Resevoir. I was very proud of myself when I learned how to ride english style while I was an undergraduate at college. Even though I am a small animal practitioner, I enjoyed my time working with the equine patients, especially the foals. According to Chinese Astrrology, people born in the year of the Dog (me) should take advantage of every opportunity that feels right in 2014. So, in a round about way, I am commencing my new path as a serious artist with this blog and website.
This watercolor was done in 2007 for my friend and colleague, celebrating the birth of their mare's filly. The piece posted is a screen shot from an image on a disc. Colors are not quite that saturated. The original painting is framed under glass and doesn't photograph well.
